Fire guts San Diego eatery featured in 'Top Gun'

SAN DIEGO —

The restaurant where Tom Cruise crooned to Kelly McGillis in the movie "Top Gun" has been gutted by a fire in San Diego.

A cook at Kansas City Barbecue says the blaze started Thursday in an open cooking pit and spread quickly to the rest of the restaurant's interior.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque says the landmark restaurant is "destroyed."

But no one was hurt and the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

A sign in the restaurant notes that the 1986 movie's "sleazy bar scene" was filmed there.

Luque estimates the damage at $400,000, not including the cost of photographs and props from the film.

Ex-Arctic Monkey reveals new band

Pete Doherty and MIA are among those who may feature on the forthcoming debut by Mongrel, a band led by former Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson.

The group's other members include Reverend and the Makers' Jon McClure and Joe Moskow, Babyshambles guitarist Drew McConnell, London rapper Lowkey, and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. Nicholson left Arctic Monkeys in 2006.

McClure spilled the beans in an interview with Billboard, describing Mongrel's sound as a mixture of rock, dance and hip-hop. "I'm the singer, Lowkey raps and then we've got a few features from other people. We had Saul Williams come in and do a thing on it and hopefully MIA is going to do something and maybe Pete Doherty. It's got a good flavour," he said.

"We're producing it ourselves," McClure said, "and I've paid for it so far out of my own pocket because I believe in it. I'm excited about it because I think that it's an important record. We're saying things that nobody's really had the bollocks to say in the last eight years. We're really taking a few people to task, kind of like we're Public Enemy or something."

Recording is taking place at London's Deep Studios, with a release planned for late 2008.

Vittorio Grigolo exemplifies the qualities of the crossover genre that exists between classical music and the pop world. He has the life-style and fashion sensory faculty of Robbie Williams only sings with a voice like Luciano Pavarotti -- in fact, the Italian press dubbed him Il Pavarotinno, the little Pavarotti, after he performed with the not bad tenor as a child.

Grigolo was innate in Arezzo and, piece still young, affected to Rome, where his talents were noticed at an early age. When he was ball club old age old he attended his mother to have her eyes time-tested and, earshot mortal singing from another room, he spontaneously began his have rendition of "Ave Maria." The isaac Merrit Singer, the optician's father of the Church, was so impressed that he insisted Grigolo have an tryout for the Sistine Chapel Choir as shortly as possible.

The young tenor linked the consort and became a soloist. At years 13 he played the Pastorello in a performance of Tosca at Rome's opera house, where he shared the microscope stage with Pavarotti. By 18 he was telling with the Vienna Opera Company and, at 23, he was the youngest isle of Man to perform in Milan's La Scala. He was likewise the first Italian isle of Man to be excused from compulsory military table service for fear of interrupting his career.

Grigolo sang in performances of the Barber of Seville, La Traviata, Così Fan Tutte, Faust, and many others in front pickings a life-changing role as Tony in West Side Story. Sharing the stage with James Gandolfini, he saw the electric potential of opera to accomplish a wider interview. After nigh becoming a extremity of Il Divo, abandoned after clashes with Simon Cowell, he recorded a solo album, In the Hands of Love, in the genre he calls "popera." It features the song "Calophyllum longifolium" from West Side Story as well as pop songs like "All in Love Is Fair" and "Bedshaped." The Classical Advisory Panel of England kept the album out of the classical charts, defining it as exactly 35.7 per centum classical (a minimum of 60 per centum is mandatory for incoming in the classical charts). In the Hands of Love debuted in the Top Ten of the U.K. pop charts instead.

Metronomy Launch Attack on Eavis, Glasto and Noel Gallagher

Metronomy slammed Michael Eavis for promising fine weather and revealed they don’t see what all the hype of Glastonbury festival is about.

The band want to hold Michael Eavis accountable for the unfortunate weather conditions.

Speaking to Gigwise about a radio interview where Eavis was quoted as saying there is wall to wall sunshine. Bass player Gabriel said: “It doesn’t matter because I’m having good time – but it’s such blatant lying.”

Oscar was singled out by the band for being a Glastonbury virgin, and a somewhat subdued Oscar quipped: “I haven’t seen any evidence that it’s so special. It sounds really harsh but maybe I will. We don’t want to be ungrateful. I am having a good time.”

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher was next on the agenda for disparaging comments as Joe contemplated the surrounding controversy of Jay-Z’s headline performance.

“What was Noel Gallagher thinking when he was talking about Glastonbury – did he not realise there were other stages.

“Someone like Noel Gallagher doesn’t understand what being a fucking huge r ‘n’ b star. Jay- Z probably had to say, it’s controversial, but he probable had to ask who Noel Gallagher was.”

Pondering the collaborations on stage with Jay-Z the band all agreed that “hopefully it won’t be Chris Martin dressed as Beyonce wiggling his arse.”

The band also took a cheeky pop at the Fun Loving Criminals laughing at their decline in status on the bill as well as Estelle for being more “Jazz lounge” as appose to “Jazz World.”

Following a discussion on what came first – the chicken or the kangaroo - the outfit offered some words of advice telling Gigwise that if you see a sign that looks fancy, chances are they’ve spent all the money on the sign. We will certainly keep that in mind.

Check back with Gigwise for all the gossip from the festival.
