Ex-Arctic Monkey reveals new band

Pete Doherty and MIA are among those who may feature on the forthcoming debut by Mongrel, a band led by former Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson.

The group's other members include Reverend and the Makers' Jon McClure and Joe Moskow, Babyshambles guitarist Drew McConnell, London rapper Lowkey, and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. Nicholson left Arctic Monkeys in 2006.

McClure spilled the beans in an interview with Billboard, describing Mongrel's sound as a mixture of rock, dance and hip-hop. "I'm the singer, Lowkey raps and then we've got a few features from other people. We had Saul Williams come in and do a thing on it and hopefully MIA is going to do something and maybe Pete Doherty. It's got a good flavour," he said.

"We're producing it ourselves," McClure said, "and I've paid for it so far out of my own pocket because I believe in it. I'm excited about it because I think that it's an important record. We're saying things that nobody's really had the bollocks to say in the last eight years. We're really taking a few people to task, kind of like we're Public Enemy or something."

Recording is taking place at London's Deep Studios, with a release planned for late 2008.
